The Incredible Benefits of Nano-Needling: What It Is + How It Works

Do you desire a smooth, even tone complexion?  You know, a complexion of less than prominent fine lines and wrinkles and free of dark spots.

Maybe you've heard of nano-needling or nano-infusion.  This is a unique technique that has a non-invasive approach garnered for its ability to rejuvenate and enhance the skin's texture.

Nano-needling is hailed for it's ability to provide results without numbing and invasively puncturing the skin below the first layer.  Giving you little to no downtime.

Let's dive into the details of this glow boosting treatment and explore - what it is, its purpose, the remarkable benefits it offers, and the science behind how it works.

What is Nano-Needling?

Nano-needling is all about improving skin texture, tone, and overall appearance - a gentler approach. Unlike traditional microneedling, which involves larger needles that penetrate deeper layers of the skin, nano-needling employs microscopic needles to create microchannels on the skin's surface. These ultra-fine needles, often smaller than a human hair, gently stimulate the epidermis (the outer layer of the skin) without causing significant damage.

The primary purpose of nano-needling is to boost collagen and elastin production, two essential proteins responsible for maintaining the skin's firmness and elasticity. By creating controlled micro-injuries on the skin's surface, nano-needling triggers the body's natural healing response, prompting the production of new collagen fibers. This process ultimately leads to firmer, smoother, and more youthful-looking skin.

→ So why nano-needling instead of mirconeedling?

Well this technique is a no downtime version of microneedling, has the ability to stimulate collagen production, help increase healthy oxygenated blow flow to your skin cells, address fine lines and wrinkles, and increase the efficacy of active ingredients WITHOUT traumatizing the skin.

Now let's talk about the benefits.

Nano-Needling Benefits

One facial treatment with nano-needling gives you quite a bit of immediate results.  But regular treatments provide long-lasting benefits.

  • Collagen Boost and Skin Rejuvenation: nano-needling is renowned for its ability to kickstart collagen production. Collagen is crucial for maintaining the skin's structural integrity, and as we age, its production naturally declines. By promoting collagen production, nano-needling helps reduce fine lines, wrinkles, and sagging skin, resulting in a more youthful complexion.
  • Improved Texture and Tone: uneven skin texture and tone are common concerns for many individuals. Nano-needling addresses these issues by promoting the regeneration of skin cells. The microchannels created during the procedure allow for better absorption of skincare products, enhancing their effectiveness and contributing to a more even skin tone and smoother texture.
  • Reduced Appearance of Scars and Hyperpigmentation: whether dealing with acne scars or sun-induced hyperpigmentation, nano-needling can be a game-changer. The controlled micro-injuries prompt the skin to heal itself, minimizing the appearance of scars and dark spots over time. This makes nano-needling a promising option for those seeking to achieve a clearer and more even complexion.
  • Minimized Pore Size: enlarged pores can be a persistent concern for many, contributing to an uneven skin texture. Nano-needling helps tighten and refine pores, giving the skin a smoother and more refined appearance. This reduction in pore size can also contribute to a decrease in excess oil production, making it beneficial for individuals with oily or combination skin.
  • Enhanced Absorption of Skincare Products:  The microchannels created during nano-needling act as pathways for improved penetration of skincare products. This means that the active ingredients in serums and creams can penetrate deeper into the skin, maximizing their efficacy. As a result, you can experience more significant improvements in your skincare routine, amplifying the benefits of your favorite products.

These benefits are something to brag about - leaving your skin healthy and rejuvenated.

What Does It Feel Like?

I'm asked this question quite often, what does nano-needling feel like?  This is hands down my favorite treatment to provide not only to clients but to myself as well.  I would describe it as a mild tingling sensation that has a barrier of a serum that is applied prior to the treatment.

How It Works

Nano-needling operates on the principle of controlled injury to stimulate the skin's natural healing mechanisms.

While every esthetician has their own unique process, here's a general overview of what to expect.

The treatment begins with a cleanse (often times a double cleanse to ensure we are working with a clean surface).  From there an enzyme can be applied to enhance your results.  We then move into the nano-needling portion.

A serum or a combination of serums are applied to the face that are specific to your concerns.  The nano-needling device is then gently glided along the skin surface, most often in sections.

I like to go over the entre face a second time (but again it's the preference of the esthetician and the client).

→ It's important that your esthetician avoids pressure while using the device as it is not necessary.  Gentle strokes is sufficient along with a good padding of serums.

Your facial is then completed with cleaning the skin surface and applying a hydrating, cooling mask (similar to applying a warm towel for additional support).  It is then concluded with finishing products such as a serum, moisturizer, and SPF.  I like to avoid facial massage during this treatment as to not interfere with the overall effectiveness.

Not to bad, right?!  Here's what you can expect after the nano-needling treatment.

What to Expect After Your Treatment

Your skin will likely show signs of redness and minor swelling - this is totally normal.

Just like with any facial, it's important to drink tons of water to flush out toxins.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Is nano-needling painful?
A: Nano-needling is generally less painful than traditional microneedling because the needles used are much smaller. Most people experience only mild discomfort or a tingling sensation during the treatment.

Q: How many treatments are needed to see results?
A: The number of treatments needed depends on your individual skin concerns and goals. Some people may see improvements after just one treatment, but a series of treatments spaced several weeks apart is often recommended for best results.

Q: Who is a good candidate for nano-needling?
A: Nano-needling is suitable for most skin types and can benefit anyone looking to improve the appearance of their skin, including those with concerns such as fine lines and wrinkles, uneven skin texture, acne scars, or enlarged pores.

Q: Are there any side effects or risks associated with nano-needling?
A: Side effects of nano-needling are generally mild and temporary, including redness, swelling, and slight discomfort. Serious complications are rare but can include infection, scarring, or hyperpigmentation if proper aftercare is not followed. It's essential to consult with a qualified skincare professional to ensure safe and effective treatment.

The Wrap-Up

This technique offers a myriad of benefits, from collagen stimulation and skin rejuvenation to improved texture and tone. Its non-invasive nature and minimal downtime make it an attractive option for those seeking noticeable improvements in their skin without undergoing more aggressive procedures. As technology continues to advance, nano-needling stands at the forefront of skincare innovation, promising a brighter, smoother, and more youthful complexion for those who dare to explore its incredible benefits.

Here's to healthy, glowing skin.
